Cristiano Ronaldo was able to maintain his lead over Romelu Lukaku in the race to win the Golden Boot Award in the Italian top flight this season despite failing to find the back of the net during the trip to Florence to take on Fiorentina at the weekend. The 36-year-old had another performance to forget for the Old Lady in what has been a recurring theme in recent weeks.
The Juventus talisman has been criticised heavily this season for his disappearing acts in big and important matches. The Old Lady had to rely on Alvaro Morata to leave Florence with a point.
Fiorentina took the lead on 29 minutes through a DusanVlahovic penalty. The Serbian player deceived Juventus shot stopper Woijcech Szczesny with a panenka penalty to give the home team the lead and also take his tally to 17 goals in the league. Morata came on for Juventus at the break and his impact was instant after the Spanish national team striker scored within one minute of his entrance as the two teams eventually settled for a 1-1 draw.
Cristiano Ronaldo came into the Fiorentina game on 25 goals and he didn’t add to that tally during the game. He was able to maintain his four-goal lead over Inter Milan striker Romelu Lukaku after the Nerazzuri player also failed to find the back of the net.
Lukaku was largely anonymous as Inter Milan beat Hellas Verona 1-0 at home to edge closer to the league title. Matteo Darmian was the hero for Inter as he scored the only goal of the game on 76 minutes. Darmian has now scored the winning goal in a 1-0 success in each of the last two home games for the Nerazzuri.
Ronaldo and Lukaku are on 25 goals and 21 goals respectively in the league. The other players in the running for the Golden Boot Award include Atalanta striker Luis Muriel and Crotone player Simeone Nwankwo. Muriel and Simeone are both on 19 goals in the Serie A this season.
